Good news from Lusaka, ZambiaBy Barnabus Chuwueke The theme of our 2007 Kids Camp was "Soldiers of Christ". There were about 43 kids in attendance at the camp as well as 15 counsellors, workers, a sports teacher and health professionals. As this was our first time to hold a Kids Camp, we decided to limit those invited to disciples’ kids and relatives. On the first night I taught a lesson on "Becoming a soldier of Christ". The theme scripture of the lesson was from Ezekiel 37:1-14 – the passage about the valley of dry bones. The main points made included the following:
The rest of the lessons were taught by the counsellors during quiet times held in the mornings. The following topics were covered:
Every morning we got up and had our quiet times. When the whistle blew, everyone would go outside and jog to a field about 1 km away to do exercises. Thereafter we would jog or walk back for a hot, lukewarm, or a cold shower, depending on your turn. We are after all soldiers of the Lord! After breakfast we played games - football, basketball and volleyball. I was the basketball and soccer coach for the 8-12 boys and girls. The older girls played mostly netball and volleyball whereas the older boys played soccer and volleyball. The older girls and boys also joined together for a mixed volleyball game. We also formed an athletics team and held a “grab an apple with your mouth” team race. On the first day of camp the kids also played board games, card games, scrabble and monopoly. The younger children were fired up to be with each other, to play all day and to sleep together in the same room. They enjoyed each another’s company immensely. God also made the camp owners extremely gracious towards us and they provided us with lots of food. The kids went for second and third helpings! The nuns were impressed with the behaviour of our kids - praise God. On our second last night we watched a movie called "Glory" about the American civil war and on the last night we held a dance party. Our new staff members, Benny and Irene, were our camp coordinators and they did a great job! They had attended a Johannesburg Kids camp in the past to learn and train under Ivor Botha so that we could eventually run our own camp. It was a major victory for God and the Church in Lusaka. |
