Good news from Lesotho

Lesotho

The Maseru Church of Christ is situated in the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. It is called the Mountain Kingdom because it is completely land locked within South Africa’s borders and surrounded by spectacular mountains. It is a small country about the size of the US State of Maryland. Its population is approximately 2 million people, mostly indigenous Basotho people (Basotho means Lesotho people). It received its independence from the UK in 1966 and is considered one of the poorest countries in the world, with an unemployment rate of 60%. The average person earns not more than R500 a month ($70). It has the second highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the world with a 30% infection rate.

The church was planted by the Johannesburg Church of Christ in 1998 by a group of missionaries.  Its current membership stands at 10 disciples. The living conditions for the average disciple in Lesotho is very challenging with not everyone having access to clean water or proper sanitation. The church is led by Mabeane Ntoko and is supported by Mathato who oversees the women’s ministry.

Mabeane became a disciple in 1999 while still studying on campus. At that time, a large group of disciples left the church.  Mabeane was the only one to remain faithful. He has since risen up to lead the church and has helped his best friend to become a disciple. He truly is a Hero of the Faith.

God has blessed the Maseru church with the continued support of its sister church in Greenville, South Carolina, USA.
